Subtext: reading between the lines
Subtext puts what a passage implies into plain words: motives, what's left unsaid, irony, the feeling under the dialogue.
It's an assistive layer for readers and writers who find implied meaning hard to pick up, including many autistic people, and a check for any writer on whether the subtext they meant actually comes through.
Readings are suggestions, never facts about what you meant: confirm them, write your own, or dismiss them. Your prose never changes, and nothing is analyzed until you ask.
Read mode: the text is protected · comments, questions and Workshop still work ·
Describe an undo
Say what you want to take back (“undo the changes to Pell's dialogue from this morning”). Shape matches it to your recorded history; you see exactly which changes, then confirm. Your later, unrelated work stays, and paragraphs you've edited since are left alone. One Undo reverses it.
Or take back a single change from History (Undo just this).

Coming soon: ask how anything works, get unstuck, or reach support.
Select any words: Comment (a note to yourself, never sent), Workshop (ask Shape: notes, or options built from your prose), or Rewrite (write your own version now).
Spelling & grammar: The ⋮ menu → Spelling & grammar underlines mistakes as you write, like any word processor.
Write: just edit the page. What you type is marked as yours.
Find AI text: Authorship → Highlight everything Shape wrote, then step through with ↑ ↓.
Start over safely: ⋯ beside a chapter title archives the current pass first.
Saving is automatic: Shape saves as you type (to your account when signed in; to this browser in the demo). "Saved" at the top shows the last save.
Export: click the Draft line at the top → Export as text or PDF (title page, author, copyright) or Export project (full backup).
Current draft
New draft · from scratch
Write freely, in any order. Start a line with // for a note or question (start with \// to keep a literal // in the story). Notes stay in your draft, never in the story. Review merge sends your prose and notes to Shape, which proposes where each passage goes; you review and apply. Ask Shape compares the versions and answers notes. Replace entire chapter swaps the whole chapter after a review.
