The short version: it’s a free beta, your work is yours, and please keep your own copies. Last updated October 31, 2026.
The beta
Shape is offered free, as an open early beta. It may change, pause or end. We’ll try to give notice before anything that affects your work, and you can export at any time.
Your work is yours
You keep all rights to what you write and upload. You give Shape only the permission it needs to store your work and show it to you, and to the readers you choose when you share a link.
Keep your own copies
Beta software can lose data. Use Export my work regularly. Shape is provided as is, without warranties, and isn’t liable for lost work or other indirect losses, to the extent the law allows.
Shape’s AI
During the beta, Shape pays for Workshop answers (from Claude, by Anthropic) up to a monthly allowance per account; when it runs out, Workshop pauses until the next month. You can instead add your own Anthropic API key: it stays in your browser, its requests are governed by your agreement with Anthropic, and you’re responsible for its costs.
Sharing
When you share a story version, anyone you give the link to can read that frozen copy and leave feedback (you can require them to sign in first). You can revoke a link at any time, and its copy stops loading.
Fair use
Don’t use Shape to break the law, to harass anyone, or to attack or overload the service. We may suspend accounts that do.
